Key Takeaways
- NSF H1 covers incidental food contact; NSF H2 is for non-contact areas and must not be treated as interchangeable.
- Base oil viscosity and thickener type drive pumpability, washout resistance and relubrication intervals.
- A documented changeover procedure is part of the lubrication programme, not an optional extra.
Food-grade lubricant selection is not only a certification question. Base oil viscosity, thickener compatibility, washdown exposure and changeover discipline decide whether an H1 product actually performs in a plant.
What an NSF H1 listing actually covers
NSF H1 registration applies to lubricants used in areas where the lubricant may contact food incidentally, typically up to a defined low level of contact. The listing confirms the formulation uses ingredients accepted for that use; it does not confirm that the product is suitable for every application in the plant. A high-viscosity H1 gear oil and a light H1 chain lubricant can both be listed and still be wrong for each other's duty.
NSF H2 products are intended for equipment where no contact with food occurs. Because H2 is not intended for incidental contact, substituting an H2 product in an H1 application is a compliance deviation, even if the product performs mechanically.
Match base oil viscosity to the mechanism, not the label
The starting point is the same as for any industrial lubricant: speed, load, temperature and the lubrication method. A slow-moving filling head running at ambient temperature usually needs a different viscosity from a gearbox on a bake line. Where washdown is frequent, the lubricant must resist emulsification and remain on the surface between cleaning cycles.
For bearings on conveyors and packaging equipment, ISO VG 220 or VG 320 oils are common; greases in NLGI 2 are typical for horizontal bearings. For gearboxes, use the gear oil grade recommended by the equipment builder and confirm the H1 listing before substitution.
Choose the thickener with the cleaning regime in mind
Aluminium complex and calcium sulphonate greases generally handle water exposure well, which suits washdown areas. Lithium complex greases offer broad temperature coverage and are widely compatible, but they can soften excessively where copious water is present. Polyurea greases perform well at high temperature and long relubrication intervals, yet they are incompatible with many other thickeners and complicate changeover.
- Frequent washdown: prioritise water resistance and adhesion over extreme temperature capability.
- High-temperature ovens and fryers: verify the drop point and oxidation stability of the grease at the actual surface temperature.
- Centralised lubrication systems: confirm pumpability at the lowest ambient temperature in the plant, not only the published service temperature.
Manage the changeover as an auditable procedure
When converting equipment from a conventional lubricant to an H1 product, residual conventional grease in lines and bearing housings is a contamination risk. Flush the system with the new lubricant where the equipment builder permits it, replace grease nipples and fittings that cannot be cleaned, and label lubrication points with the new product and grade.
Record the changeover date, product, batch and the points converted. During a food safety audit, the ability to show that every incidental-contact point uses a listed lubricant is often more important than the brand chosen.
Documentation that survives an audit
Keep the current NSF listing for each product in use, including the category and the registration number. Pair it with a plant lubrication map showing which points are H1, which are H2 and which are non-food areas. Review the map whenever a line is modified, because new equipment often arrives with a factory fill that has not been assessed.
